There are eight electrical protection concepts. The concepts are:

Protective Measures

Protective measures shall be considered

Ensure ignition sources can not arise
Ensure ignition sources can not become effective
Prevent explosive atmosphere reaching ignition sources
Contains the explosion and prevents flame propagation

Constructional Requirements

Category 1 not more than 10% in total of aluminium,magnesium, titanium and zirconium; and not more than 7.5% of magnesium, titanium and zirconium.
Category 2 not more than 7.5% magnesium
Category 3 no requirement
